Vienna is about three to three and a half hours from Hallstatt each way, so these are full-day trips that usually add Salzkammergut stops — a viewpoint, another lake — to justify the distance. They're the right choice if Vienna is your base and you don't want to relocate, but expect a lot of coach time and tighter free time in the village.
From Salzburg: more village, less driving
Salzburg is only around ninety minutes away, so Salzburg day trips give you more time in Hallstatt and an easier day. If you're near Salzburg, or moving between the two cities, this is the better-value way to see the village properly.
Add-ons and beating the crowds
Decide whether the salt mine, the Skywalk or a lake boat ride matters most and book an option that includes it. Whichever trip you take, Hallstatt is calmest early and late — the famous viewpoint is best before the midday coaches arrive.
