Hallstatt day trip from Vienna

What you're booking

This is a guided coach day trip from Vienna, not an entry ticket. It lasts about 13 hours. A live English-speaking guide travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the tour can also be run in Russian. The route stops for about 30 minutes at Schloss Ort, a castle on Lake Traunsee, and then goes on to Hallstatt, where you have around 3 hours before the drive back to Vienna. The Skywalk and hotel pickup are options you choose when you book. Food and drinks, hotel drop-off and the boat ride are not included.

Vienna or Salzburg?

Where you sleep decides this more than the tour does. The Vienna trip covers about 600 km of motorway in one day, roughly eight hours of driving including a 30-minute stop. Salzburg is much closer to the Salzkammergut, so a trip from there leaves more of the day in the village and less on the road. Book the Vienna tour if Vienna is your base and you would rather not change hotels. If you are travelling between the two cities, plan your Hallstatt day from Salzburg instead.

Where the tour starts

The standard meeting point is outside the tourist information office behind the State Opera House, in front of the Albertina Museum. Karlsplatz is the closest underground station. If you would rather be collected, choose the pickup option when you book; it covers centrally located Vienna hotels. Hotel drop-off at the end is not included, because the tour finishes back at the Opera area. Your confirmation shows the meeting time and any pickup details for your date, so read it the day before.

The day, in order

The tour follows one route, so there are no stops to choose between. You leave Vienna by coach with your guide, and the sequence is in the list below. At Schloss Ort you can walk out onto the wooden bridge that joins the castle to the shore. Wikipedia places the castle in Lake Traunsee, at Gmunden. After that the coach continues to Hallstatt, where the free time is yours to spend on the village, the Skywalk if you chose it, or lunch.

The Skywalk option

The Skywalk is a separate option you select when booking. It is a viewing platform jutting out from the mountainside high above the rooftops, reached by the Salzberg funicular, and from it you look down on the village, the lake and the mountains. Salzwelten, which runs the funicular, says you reach the platform from the panoramic lift. It doesn't say how long the visit takes, so expect it to use a good part of your village time. If you skip it, the village itself has no entrance fee.

Why the salt mine doesn't fit

The salt mine isn't part of this tour. Salzwelten asks visitors to allow at least three hours, which has to cover checking in at the funicular valley station, the ride up the mountain, the walk to the mine entrance and the guided tour underground. Your whole time in Hallstatt is around three hours, so the mine can't be squeezed in. If the mine is the point of your trip, go independently with a full day or an overnight stay. Children must be 4 or over, and the mine is not wheelchair accessible.

The boat ride isn't included

The boat ride is not included in the tour price. From May to October you can buy tickets on the spot at your own expense. That decision comes out of your three hours, so settle it before you arrive: a cruise leaves less time for the lanes and the viewpoint. Don't confuse a cruise with the ferry that serves the railway station. That ferry leaves at the times trains arrive and depart, and it is a transport link between the station and the village centre, not a sightseeing trip.

Coach tour or train and ferry?

You can reach Hallstatt without a tour. Hallstatt's official site calls the train the most relaxed way to arrive from Vienna or Salzburg, because parking in the village is limited and often full. The station is on the opposite shore of the lake. A ferry leaves at the times of the trains and lands in the village centre, a stone's throw from the market square. Going independently gives you your own timing and room for the salt mine. You lose the guide, the fixed return and the single booking, so check the train and ferry timetables before you commit.

Being on time for the coach

Coaches can't wait around in Hallstatt. Since 1 June 2020, every tour bus bringing passengers to the village must book an entry and exit slot, with a minimum stay between the two. Coaches drop off and pick up at a dedicated bus terminal at the edge of the village rather than in the centre. The window for getting on or off is short, and day-trip coaches can't park at the terminal. So agree a meeting point and time with your guide before you wander off, and be there when it comes.

Booking, children and cancelling

Booked through GetYourGuide, this tour can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund, and you can reserve now and pay later. Children under 3 are not suitable for the tour, and a separate seat must be booked for infants and children. Wheelchair users are not suitable for it either. There is no minimum number of participants, so the tour runs even with few bookings. Choose the Skywalk and pickup options at the same time as your date, because they are selected during booking.

Who this isn't for

This tour isn't for you if the salt mine is a must, if you want a slow day in the village, or if about eight hours of driving sounds like too much. It isn't suitable for children under 3 or for wheelchair users. And if you want a boat ride included in the price, this tour doesn't have one. Those travellers are better served by the train and ferry, an overnight stay in Hallstatt, or a Salzburg departure with a shorter drive.
